Nifty Restoration of Damaged MV Agusta F4-1000

The devil is in the details - so says an old pearl of wisdom. In this case, it appears that the details are the highlight of the devil - the devil being the MV Agusta F4. It is a mean machine, though not exactly evil to the owner, at least. The Garage Endeavors team were given a 'slightly worn' F4-1000 and took to working on the bike - the changes are hard to spot if you are not familiar with the build: carbon fiber fuel tank, special rearsets, lighting changes, and the most interesting customization is the easily switchable tail section; it can be easily changed to mono- or biposto in a few minutes. Have a look - and look close...

The Ninth Annual NHRA Las Vegas Nationals went well for series leader Arana and his Buell team. The Man Behind Shell Oil's Work With Ducati Racing Teams

Michael Knaak is the man behind the Shell Advance lubricants which Ducati uses in both their racing and street-going motorcycles. He was also partially responsible for the Shell V-Power fuel - if only slightly. He works with a team of engineers at Shell and Ducati to create the amazing blends which they produce for the World Superbike and MotoGP teams; only when engineers at both companies are happy does the lubricant or fuel get used in MotoGP...Interesting back story that you might never have read if you had not found it here.

A New Electric Motorcycle Enters - The Jim Corning PrometheusSolar

Corning started out by converting a Kawasaki motorcycle to run on electricity (meaning that about all of the bike still made by Kawasaki was the frame, forks, and maybe wheels). This time, though, it is different. He has designed his PrometheusSolar from the ground up. Some very cool technology has been applied to his design - including a double control arm front suspension - and it will make 100 mph and go for 100 miles on one charge. It could be the beginning of another entrant into the production electric motorcycle industry.

Chad Reed Signs With Kawasaki for AMA Motocross and Supercross

There were rumors that he was thinking of the signing - especially when he rode a Kawasaki in the Australian Super X series. Well, now Reed will be riding alongside Ryan Villopoto on the Monster Energy Kawasaki team in both the AMA Motocross Championship and the AMA Supercross Championship. This should really shake things up when he goes up against James Stewart and the new Yamaha YZ450F - either way, both series are sure to be very good racing!

There is no confirmation of this, but the Yamaha Motor Italia is 'restructuring' and will let go ~66 employees from its 200 strong workforce. And, it is that shop which handles Yamaha's WSBK effort. It is odd to hear this - and the other Yamaha news about them pulling away from the AMA/DMG series - given that they have really dominated the world-wide championships - and they won the World Supersport crown this year, which is the very series they may withdraw from. Harley-Davidson: The 'American' Motorcycle Company Becoming Even Less American

Given the sad sales figures of H-D in the last financial quarter, they have taken some measures which any company would take to save their company - they closed Buell and will sell MV Agusta. But, it may get even worse for them. For the longest time I have seen Harley riders proclaim their motorcycle's American-ness. This was even though the suspension was made in Japan (and owned by Honda), the lights also made in Japan, some electronics made in Europe, some - again - from Japan, and even designers from outside of the US helped them create their classic motorcycles. The truth is that not even Japanese motorcycles are all Japanese - it is a myth that the headquarters of a company determines where their products are built. And, now it seems that H-D will have to outsource even more work overseas...and close their York, PA plant - that would be very sad indeed - so many workers laid-off...Let's hope it gets better for them whether you like their motorcycles or not!

Ducati's MotoGP Team Gains New Team Manager

This could, possibly, be an indication that Valentino Rossi will be moving to Ducati after 2010, but I am still hopeful he will not make that switch. This is because Rossi is not fond of Livio Suppo, the outgoing team manager. In either case, whether this is for Rossi or not, it is good to see Ducati actually promoting from within the company. Suzuki Reveals 2010 Gladius 400 at Tokyo Motor Show

It is very doubtful - right now - that the smaller displacement version of the normally 650c.c. V-twin machine will see the outside of Japan. That being said, the gray market will probably get a few to other nations as this will be a popular machine, especially with new riders. Suzuki would probably sell thousands of these 400c.c. It sucks that we have to have a law about it, but that is the only way it works, unfortunately. OK, well, let us get to the motorcycle-only police checkpoints. This is the second riding impression I have come across for this motorcycle and I am posting another one because of just how stylish this bike looks and it is just so well suited for racing. Well, it is a different machine - it runs the BMW/Rotax 650cc single from the BMW Funduro and is covered in carbon-fiber bodywork, but CR&S (Cafe Racers and Superbikes) may be on to something here. The bike is compact and handles very well - and it is very powerful for its light weight, but it vibrates a great deal in the upper reaches of its powerband. When you purchase one of these £9,999, you also must have enough money to paint it and add any accessories and options you choose from the extensive catalog. This would make an excellent track-day weapon and might even fit within a local racing class...I would certainly consider it!

The Government of Hungary Gives Support for Balatonring MotoGP Round

The Balatonring circuit was supposed to be finished in time for a 2009 event, but the economic climate was so bad that the bank supporting the track construction had to delay financing. So, the Hungarian government has issued guarantee on a loan from the Hungarian Development Bank and €74.7 million for the race to run from 2010 through to 2019. They are very determined to get the MotoGP World Championship racing in Hungary!

The Magnum SRI custom compound consists of at least 16% recycled material and it comprises 20% of the new tires, which are made for motorcycles of 70 to 110c.c. So, no big news for those of us on larger machines, but still a great step towards being able to recycle all of those used tires we throw away every year. And, when you include the entire world, those motorcycles are the most popular - and, thus use more tires - than any size of motorcycle. It really is no wonder that cagers support helmet laws - some riders just have no common sense.

HISSES to news that the first-ever South Dakota survey on motorcycle helmet use showed such poor results. Only about a third of motorcycle riders in the state use helmets, according to the survey conducted by the state Office of Highway Safety. We aren’t really surprised by such news, but we’ll hope the number rises in future surveys. Honda Displayed More Than Electric Concept Motorcycles at the Tokyo Motor Show

OK, what is this? Number 6 or 7? It's pretty interesting, actually. Honda put on display several petrol-powered motorcycles as well as the nifty EV-Cub. A lovely, wish we had it in the US, Red-White-Blue CBR1000RR (pictured at left). It's not actually gorgeous or anything, just very well done and it makes up for some of the so-called 'piecemeal' look of the fairing. The real beauty, though is certainly the CB1100 'Customize Concept' - the usual, "will it be produced or not" bike - and they had a VFR1200F as well. Another, we-will-not-get-it-in-the- US beast of a road burner has to be the 2010 CB1300 Super Touring. It could be an excellent sport-tourer as is, but the front fairing should be changed a bit, and it could use some more modern features (though I do not have specifications yet). It would be nice to see it compared to the ST1300...Anyway, have a look - pretty pictures follow the link - very shiny.

Azhar Hussain Will Unveil Electric Superbike at SEMA in Las Vegas

Hussain, who organized the TTXGP at this year's Isle of Man TT, has announced that he will reveal his new Mavizen electric motorcycle at the SEMA show in Las Vegas on 3 November 2009. He did not release many details, but he produced a photo (very small and only of one single part) and said that testing went very well at the Zolder circuit in Belgium. The other data is that the bike is designed specifically for motorsports, will be open-source programmable via USB ports, and it will be supported by a factory - though which one it is remains to be known...

FIM Changes World Superbike Championship Rules

The FIM has updated the homologation rules for the manufacturers. They must now only use fly-by-wire, ABS and other technologies if they are available on the units sold to the public. Current regulations require a manufacturer to have produced 1000 units for public purchase; this was originally set o go up to 3000 for 2010, but they have reduced that number to 2000 units. This move could help KTM with their RC8R get into the series next season...more after the link.

Ben Spies Takes Pole Position for WSBK Round at Portimao!

It is his eleventh pole position of the season and it breaks Doug Polen's previous record. It is the perfect position for Spies as he races for the World Superbike Championship this weekend. This could mean that Spies will be World Champion, but the race has yet to be run...

Velentino Rossi has clenched the pole position for the MotoGP race at Sepang which might see him take the overall Championship. Rossi also broke his own lap record at the track. Casey Stoner was almost a second slower than Rossi and will start in fourth. Jorge Lorenzo finished in second and Dani Pedrosa followed him to third. To cut costs in the series, the managers of the British Superbike Championship have decided to allow only one bike per competitor in all series (Superbike, Supersport, Superstock 600, Superstock 1000). Will Apple Be Able to Save the Motorcycle Magazines and Journalism, Itself?

If you read the linked article, you might find it possible that the iPhone and the applications sold for it just might have the ability to save modern journalism. But, what the author conveniently leaves out of the discussion is Apple's constant grab for profits; if they make the content too expensive, readers will not buy it. In order to keep themselves afloat, magazines would have to charge enough for their content - but, Apple will also want a slice of that pie - as they always do - and that just might push the price beyond what owners of the iPhone will pay - after all, the data service for the iPhone costs more than the phone itself when calculating annual costs...and, well, people do not have that much money these days. However, I hope that something can save journalism because I am tired of hearing what happened to Lindsay Lohan last night...
