This article is a little biased towards our favorite sport, motorcycling, but it does make a good point about pollution. Motorcycles use much less of everything that cars use - production costs, fuel, oil, etc. - and they produce less pollutants than almost any car on the road now (hybrids have some pollution advantages).
So, instead of buying a new car BUY A MOTORCYCLE!

However, his calculations on how much energy and pollution the US Government's 'Cash for Clunkers' saves are questionable at best. He even managed to leave out the fact that, on average, Americans keep their cars for seven years (it has actually increased to nine years during the current recession). And, it leaves out the benefit to auto dealerships, their employees, and the salvage yards, which are all seeing solid returns from the program.
