It was not only the teams of WSBK who took to the Phillip Island circuit this weekend, the 2010 Australian Superbike Championship also kicked off this weekend. It was certainly a good race weekend, but only one rider walked away with the win in both races, GAS Honda's Wayne Maxwell. He took the victory over Bryan Staring and Josh Waters in race one, and got by Jamie Stauffer and Staring to take first in race two. For all the details, please take one of the links below.

The Australian Superbike Championship has signed on a new naming rights sponsor - Viking Group, an Australian transport, logistics and related services company. Everyone seems happy with the deal, including the organizer of the events, International Entertainment Group.

From Alex Gobert comes an article stating that current Australian Supersport Champion Bryan Staring could make a dramatic return to Honda for 2010. It is a rather confusing string of events which have led to this revelation, but it does have to do with Yamaha leaving ASBK to compete in the FX series. Well worth a read...

There are four Australians who will be competing in the World Superbike Championship, and the season starts in only a few weeks. Troy Corser, Chris Vermeulen, Andrew Pitt and Broc Parkes. It is odd to hear such news, though, as I would expect a much larger contingent from Down Under. But, there are Australians in motorcycle racing series all over the planet - maybe that's enough for them...it certainly would be for nations much larger than Australia.

Australian Yamaha Off-Road Elite Training Program Very Successful
Over in Australia in 2007, Yamaha and Stephen Gall set up an intense training program for all Yamaha sponsored athletes in the nation - it was called the Yamaha Elite Training Program (YETP). The training program has provided for three championships in 2009 alone! That is what I call success. And, if you read the article, you will see how many other athletes have taken advantage of the program and improved their skills - and it not only helps off-road riders, but road racers too!

Josh Waters is Australian Superbike Champion in Rookie Season
Yep, it's true, Waters and his Team Joe Rocket Suzuki won both final races at Phillip Island this weekend, and that brought them the ASBK crown for 2009. Waters held of riders Glenn Allerton and Wayne Maxwell, who were also in contention for the prize, and took the Championship in his first season in the series and at the young age of 22. What's next? Well, how about another season and another championship! Bryan Staring won the Australian Supersport Championship class, and Pat Medcalf claimed the inaugural Australian Superstock 1000 Championship. It was a great weekend for racing Down Under.

A Race Series of Which I Have Barely Covered - The Australian Superbike Championship
I should be much more involved with this race series - as with the BSB, the Australia Superbike Championship produces many world-class racers. In fact, the series was run in conjunction with the MotoGP races at Phillip Island (and I still missed it!). The Superbike Championship points race is heating up Down Under. Now, there is only one more event and the leaders - Glenn Allerton and Josh Waters - are only two points away from each other. In the Supersport class, it looks as if points leader Bryan Staring will take the Championship. Stay tuned and I will keep you updated.
