The 2009 French National Superbike Championship was won by Sebastien Gimbert, who was riding a race-prepped version of the 2009 Yamaha R1. The R1 is winning championships and accolades from all over the world. The new 'crossplane' crankshaft seems to have improved the power band well enough for some exceptionally smooth racing. Will other manufacturers follow suit? As the 2009 R1 - which is actually a little down on overall horsepower from the 2008 model - is winning races and championships everywhere, it must certainly be putting ideas in their heads...I hope!
