MV Agusta Wins after 38 Years Away!

Jusel Cluzel Wins in World SuperSport
Giacomo Agostini was the last one to do it, back in 1976 at the Nurburgring. MV Agusta carried that day and then retired (not Ago, though, he kept on racing). Today, 38 years later, at the Phillip Island Circuit in Australia, MV Agusta brought another rider home in first place. That would be Jusel Cluzel, who took the win in the World Supersport Championship aboard the Yakhnich Motorsport F3 675 after battling his way to the flag from a 14th position start. Amazing! Finally, MV Agusta is back where they belong!

Full text of the press release from MV Agusta:

Varese, 23rd February 2013 – Thirty-eight years on from their last success, achieved by the great Giacomo Agostini on his 4-cylinder 350 cc at the Nürburgring, MV Agusta are back on the top of a world championship podium. The superb F3 675 of the MV Agusta Reparto Corse - Yakhnich Motorsport team has, in fact, pulled off a stunning Supersport win at the Phillip Island circuit to take the first round of this World Championship.

The win followed an incredible comeback by Jusel Cluzel: despite starting from 14th place on the grid, he soon set an astonishing pace, steadily making his way up the field to catch the leaders and setting the scene for a spectacular battle for final victory. In the end a gutsy Cluzel got the best of Coghlan and De Rosa, who came in second and third respectively. In short, the young French rider of the MV Agusta Reparto Corse - Yakhnich Motorsport team rode a blinder, showcasing both his considerable talent and the bike’s enormous potential. The team’s other standard bearer, Vladimir Leonov, might well have put in an equally brilliant performance were it not for an unfortunate fall in the first few laps.

Jules Cluzel: “We were terribly unlucky both during testing and at the start of the weekend. We rode far fewer laps than we should have. So, after that, going on to win was just a dream! Before the start I told my mechanics I’d do my utmost: and that’s exactly what I did, without making a single mistake. It’s a deserved victory; we’ve still got a long way to go but we’re convinced that the bike and the Team have huge potential”.

Delighted by this success, Giovanni Castiglioni, President of MV Agusta, stated: “A marvellous win, an indescribable thrill. I want to dedicate this first victory to my father, whose faith in MV and the possibility of a successful return to racing was always unshakeable, and the late father of Brian Gillen, our Reparto Corse manager. I want to thank the Yakhnich Motorsport team and everyone involved in this ambitious project for their exemplary commitment”.

Como-born rider Claudio Corti’s debut in Superbike proved more problematic yet was, nevertheless, encouraging. Riding the F4 RR, he finished the two races in 13th and 18th position respectively, with only a tough start in Race 2 preventing him from taking points in both.

Just Lovely! Ducati Teams with Edelweiss - Ducati Travel Experience World

The Ducati Travel Experience World (DTEW) is premiering at just the right time. The 2010 Ducati Multistrada 1200 is debuting to the world all over and Ducati decided to hook up with Edelweiss Bike Travel to create a special tour series using that lovely machine (I hate to admit it, but I desire one myself...). There are four tours which cover parts of Africa, Australia, Europe and the Western USA. Just take the link as you do owe it to yourself to see how the other half lives...it would be sweet if I could sell my kidneys!

Ducati NA Offers Class with Polen & New Ducati Ambassador Scott McGregor

Ducati North America is offering riders who purchase a 2009 or 2010 Ducati sportbike a chance to ride with World Superbike Champion Doug Polen at his Doug Polen 1-on-1 Riders School at one of twelve US circuits. It's a very good promotion as this will give you a chance to get the most out of your brand new Italian motorcycle. Plus, Polen is a very nice and down-to-earth guy who knows how to ride very, very well. If you pick the new 848 Dark, you also get a limited edition Swiss watch. For more, please take the link...

http://tinyurl.com/y9ybecr

In Australia, a rather popular male model and actor has become the next Ducati Ambassador. Scott McGregor went to Ducati City to pick up his 2010 Streetfighter on Monday, 15 March. He will ride the bike all over Melbourne and appear at many events with the motorcycle. Goof for him!

Alex Gobert's Racing Insider & CMRA's Dustin Dominguez

From 'Racing Insider' we get news about Australian Motocross - something we rarely get news of on this continent - American Supercross, Australian Superbike, and MotoGP. In this St. Patrick's Day edition - though it is obviously not as popular in Oz - we get some very good news on the off-road racing world in Australia. The other bits are mostly information you already know, but old Gobert is pretty good at summarizing it all. So, go and take a look...

http://tinyurl.com/ya27dvb

Dustin Dominguez is now an expert road racer using his talents to contest the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association' s 2010 championship series. He may not be there for long, though, especially after this past weekend. He took his own Kawasaki ZX-6R and a borrowed Suzuki SV650 to seven - yes, 7 - victories at Eagle's Canyon Raceway in Texas. Dominguez was not the only racer having a good weekend, though, so take the link and read about all the other CMRA race results...

More Morning Moto News - Alex Gobert's Racing Insider

This week's 'Racing Insider' from our Australian friend Alex Gobert is now available. There are the usual stories on Australian Motocross, which just started its season, Australian off-road motorcycle racing, Australian Superbike, MotoGP, and Moto2 this week. There is some good detail on the Oz MX world as we hear so little about it up here in the US; he has a good story on a young off-road racer, Daniel McCoy; he also goes into some detail on the happenings in MotoGP. Don't miss it, please take the link and have a read!

More Afternoon Moto News - Amy O'Mara, Leon Camier & NZ Novice Wins on Aprilia

Amy O'Mara is the only woman competing full-time in the Australian Superbike Championship and this year she will be supported by the Warringah Mall Eagles Angels, a group which raises awareness for breast cancer. This season will see her remain on a Yamaha and compete in both the Superstock 600 class and the Australian Formula Xtreme Championship. She will be rather busy in 2010!

http://tinyurl.com/ybf8qjj

Leon Camier is quite pleased with the way the Aprilia factory team is treating him despite rumors that he is the second man on the team behind Max Biaggi. Camier states that he has been given the same parts and knowledge as Biaggi and is moving along in the right direction. Plus, the 2010 season for him is about learning the circuits and getting familiar with his team and the World Superbike series itself.

Dion Sellers is not a professional - or, even amateur - road racer, but he still managed to beat the best that New Zealand had at a local Formula 1 race! He had no interest until he watched a race last month. His friend convinced him to take his brand new Aprilia RSV-4 to the track for a fun day; he did so well that he decided to race the next day. His bone-stock RSV-4 managed to take out bikes worth more than twice as much which have been modified heavily to race. It was a big surprise, to say the least!

More Morning Moto News - Oceania MX & Marouane Bembli

The Australian contingent at the Oceania Motocross Championships managed to turn in a very impressive race performance which saw them win the title at the event. New Zealand was their main competition, but the Kiwis did not have all of the racers finish on the podium and thus gave the event to their Aussie neighbors. Oz won by a mere 18 points, but the results looked rather better for them than NZ.

http://tinyurl.com/ygja2xj

Marouane Bembli has created a concept motorcycle which was inspired by the insipid "Transformers" movie, but the bike looks much more Batbike than something Megan Fox would ride. In fact, it even has the long and low look of the Bat-machine from the new Batman films. Take a look for yourself, though there is precious little information on the bike anywhere as of yet.

Wednesday Afternoon Moto News - Racing Insider, GNCC Results & Royal Enfield Demos

We couldn't leave Alex Gobert and his 'Racing Insider' column out of the posting, now could we? In this issue, he looks closely into the Australian and World Superbike Championships and talks about the Phillip Island round. It is a very useful round-up of important bits of news which may have been missed by the big media outlets. Take the link and you will enjoy!

The first round of the 2010 Grand National Cross Country Series went off this past weekend at the Westgate River Ranch in Florida. Makita Suzuki's Josh Strang took the victory. Though we did not see this earlier, I thought it would be nice to get a story which focuses on the Australian Supersport Championship round held this past weekend at Phillip Island. Tuesday Morning Moto News - Rider Dies on Phillip Island & MV Agusta F4 Review

A 72-year-old rider who was taking advantage of a program which allows spectators to take to the Phillip Island track after the races are finished. He had rented a Suzuki GSX-R600 to ride the circuit. While riding into the second turn he lost control and crashed - the rider behind him did not have time to stop and hit him. Early reports on the riding manners of the new 2010 MV Agusta F4-1000R are quite good. Many had complained about previous models being rather unforgiving on the road, but I have yet to seen that proven. However, the new F4 has the road-going behavior of a Honda now - it is smooth, easy to control, and takes to the track as if it were born there - and it was. For your own opinion, go take a demo ride or just take the link and read the review.

More Morning Moto News - Phillip Island WSBK and World Supersport

The World Superbike race this past weekend at Phillip Island was a success story for some British riders, many of whom have also competed in the British Superbike Championships over the last several years. Of course, Leon Haslam, this weekend's double winner, was once in the BSB series, but now he is firmly ahead of all WSBK riders after one round. He did win the first race by the slimmest margin in WSBK history, but that means little as he still takes the 25 points with him to the next round...

http://tinyurl.com/yzk5apu

One area of WSBK which often gets overlooked in the headline stories around the world is the World Supersport series which is one of the WSBK support classes. This past weekend at Phillip Island, there Eugene Laverty schooled the field after the re-start and has taken the early lead. He had some issues in practice and qualifying trying to keep up with some seemingly faster riders, but that did not stop him from taking the checkered flag!

As you probably saw in the race, they still have some work to do to get the RSV-4 setup to the liking of both Biaggi and Camier. For all the details, please take the link.

Sunday Morning Moto News - Early Daytona Returns & WSBK Results from Phillip Island

Bike Week has kicked off in Daytona, Florida, this weekend and the first results have come back from the Michelin Team Challenge. That's right, the World Superbike Championship round at Phillip Island is over, and we have several posts which detail the events in Australia and tell us who ended up where when the checkered flag was dropped at the end of both races. In race one, the finish was Haslam, Fabrizio and Haga; in race two, it was Checa, Haslam and then Fabrizio. As you can see, Ducati and Suzuki had great weekends. Aprilia had a good outing, but not a perfect race. For all the details, please take the links below.

More Afternoon Moto News - ASBK Qualifying & Interviews

In today's qualifying for the Australian Superbike Championship round at Phillip Island this weekend, GAS Honda's Wayne Maxwell took the pole. He fought hard against Motologic Ducati's Jamie Stauffer and Suzuki's Josh Waters. The times were so close, though, that they all might as well have qualified together. So, expect the first lap of the race to be very interesting as these three vie for the lead...

There are many more stories on the race this weekend, but most of them are very similar. However, they all have a slightly different perspective. Plus, there is information on the other support class qualifications - something we rarely get to see in international reports. Saturday Afternoon Moto News - Haslam Takes Pole & More WSBK!

Leon Haslam has taken his first ever pole position in World Superbike at the Phillip Island circuit in Australia. It is the first race of 2010, so this indicates just how hungry Haslam is for a win - and the championship. It will be an interesting race - don't miss it!

Another look at the World Superbike proceedings in Australia. We get a re-cap on Haslam's Superpole performance, Haga starting in tenth (!), and even my pick for this race, Max Biaggi, sitting back in eleventh position. There is a full grid listing and other information which you may want to know ahead of the race weekend.

http://tinyurl.com/ye6b67x

We also get to hear from the always talking Chris Vermeulen. He is targeting a top-10 position and hoping for seventh or eighth for the race this weekend at Phillip Island. This will give Kawasaki a higher finish than it had back in 2009 and help Vermeulen get the support he needs to race for the title.

MORE Afternoon Moto News - Beach and Beaubier, Shane Byrne & WSBK Preview (again)

J.D. Beach and Cameron Beaubier will both be racing for Rockwall Honda in the AMA Pro Racing SuperSport East series. Both riders are still quite young, but they both also have many years of experience already. This pairing should be a powerhouse team in the SuperSport class. For more information, please take the link.

http://tinyurl.com/ycbh83p

During the World Superbike qualifying at Phillip Island in Australia, Shane Byrne crashed hard and hurt his back. It is so severe that it may keep him out of this weekend's racing at the track. He was chasing Checa at the time, so he was certainly pushing himself. Let's hope he gets some rest and gets back in the saddle before Sunday!

From Alpinestars we get another preview of what to expect this weekend at Phillip Island. I am only posting this one because it is a bit different from the others. So, if you want some entertaining words about your favorite sport, please take the link.

Friday Morning Moto News - FIM Homologated Motorcycles, Leon Haslam

The FIM has released its list of the homologated motorcycles which may participate in each of the classes within WSBK. For the list, please take the link...

http://tinyurl.com/yjpocee

Leon Haslam, he of Alstare Suzuki team, was the fastest rider on day one of the World Superbike testing at Phillip Island. He was the only rider to lap within his bracket. This bodes well for his WSBK season...but, he is up against the best in the world and the WSBK paddock is loaded with talent...so, we still must wait to see how the season goes...

http://tinyurl.com/y8pbm55

It appears as if Max Biaggi is not too far behind Haslam...Biaggi clocked the fastest top speed of anyone at Phillip Island on a Superbike, in fact he beat out his competition by 3.7 kph. It was not enough to get him past the top slot on the lap chart, but he is getting there. Just wait for race day!

MORE Afternoon Moto News - MotoGP Budgets & World Superbike Preview

The budget will be the determining factor for whether Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Ducati move up to the newly ruled displacement in MotoGP. The maximum displacement goes from 800 to 1000cc when the 2012 season begins, but the factories want the ability to continue to run their 800 engines in the class if they cannot afford to build an entirely new model. They all want to be able to move to the liter sized bikes, but they are not sure they can get the money to do so...

From my friends at All About Bikes we have a great preview of the 2010 World Superbike Championship - which, incidentally, starts in just a few days at Phillip Island in Australia. The author takes on each of the teams and, though he does not cover every single detail of every rider, he does a very good job of giving you a quick portrait of each rider on the team and their recent history. http://tinyurl.com/yfuz8uf

In the BSB paddock, Gary Mason is going for the Championship! Of course, all riders in the fields will want to do that, and most will figure they have some chance of it at the beginning of the season. But, Mason has already won the Privateer's Cup last year, so his next step is that Championship. Will he take Kawasaki to the top of the BSB podium? Well, we will all have to stay tuned...

Australian and World Supersport Champion Andrew Pitt recently got the chance to take to the skies in a BAC 167 1000km/h Strikemaster MK88 Jet Fighter. Rodney Hall, a NZ businessman and celebrated pilot - and a huge Pitt fan - was responsible for taking him up in the jet fighter. All pre-1986 motorcycles are welcome to enter for judging in various categories. Also, there will be some vintage motocross held in conjunction with the event.
