Tuesday Morning Moto News - SA Superbike, Masterbike & Thundersport GB

They actually refer to it as the 2010 South African Motorcycle championship, but it is the premier motorcycle road-race series in South Africa. This coming weekend will mark races three and four at the Western Cape Killarney circuit. Currently, Sheridan Morais and Lance Isaacs are tied in the points for first in the Superbike class. The BMW S1000RR has wiped the rest of the competition off of the circuit at the annual Masterbike shootout which takes place in Spain every year. The BMW went up against all of the top liter-class sportbikes from Europe and Japan as well as the 1200cc V-Twins - and it smashed them all. The Thundersport GB season kicks off this coming weekend (12 - 14 March 2010) at Mallory Park in the UK. Many of the teams were out practicing this pas weekend at the same venue - as well as racing on Sunday in a local series. Steve Tomes (racer) and Ricky Leddy (manager) managed to do very well in last year's Thundersport GB Moto 450 class on their Yamaha - they placed second overall and had eight wins and two second places. Ian Mackman is very similar to the team above in that he just wants to go racing. He crashed last year at over 120 mph and was severely injured. Now he has mostly recovered from those nasty injuries and he really wants to be on the Thundersport GB grid by the March opening event. It seems that he is all ready for his season now, so all he needs is to stay well.

Repli-Cast UK Racing Team Announces Riders for 2010

In the BSB Superstock 600 series, Robbie Stewart will take to the track on a Buildbase-backed ZX-6R. Kasey Wyatt will contend the Relentless British 125GP Championship. Sam Hornsey - a new signing - will contend the same series as Wyatt in 2010. And their other new racer, Josh Corner, will contest the Thudersport GB “Superteen Challenge”. Looks like Repli-Cast will have broad representation in the U.K. racing series.

MSS Colchester Kawasaki Signs Tony Coombs to Race in MRO Stocksport Championship

Yep, MSS Colchester is supporting U.K. club racing - in hopes, of course, that their new signing will move up. Coombs did very well in the Thundersport MRO Supersport 600 Championship, so they are going to take him in and put him on a Kawasaki ZX-6R to race in the Stocksport series and some wildcard rides in the Metzeler National Superstock, which runs with the BSB series.

Thundersport GB Tests Aprilia RRV Moto 450 at Almeria

The new motorcycle race concept of taking a 450 motocross-type motorcycle and converting it into a road race bike (often referred to as Formula 450) has been catching on everywhere of late. I still remember the first article I read about it some four years ago - I had expected it to start up sooner, but the economy probably helped to delay it a bit. Still, overall, running such a team is rather inexpensive when compared to even a Supersport series, so it should bring in plenty of privateers. In this article, some Aprilia Superteen competitors, Ian Newton and Jeremy McWilliams attended a Dunlop tire test at the Spanish Almeria Circuit to see how hard these machines will be on tires - hint: they're not at all...

Thundersport GB Will Add Sidecar Championship Series

This should be interesting! I wish that we had something similar in the US so I could go watch it. Anyway, the newly formed Thudersport GB series has created an additional class to run in conjunction with its events. The National F1 Sidecar Championship will have side-hack professional racers from all over the world as well as many British teams. Three different champions will be crowned at the end of the year. Check it out and make sure you go and watch the racing if you are able!

Racer Sam Burman - A Look Back on the 2009 Season

Burman competed in at least three series - the NGRRC 125cc Championship, Thundersport GP3 series, and the ACU National 250cc Championship (run along with the NGRRC series). So, she used two bikes during 2009 - a Bartonfield Ltd Honda RS125 and a Penrith Motorcycles Yamaha TZ250. Riding two different manufacturers' motorcycles, and competing in three series, is enough to prove that she deserves to be in the road-racing world. But, it is her results which keep her sponsored and keep her on the track. Good luck in 2010, Burman!

Britain's Thundersport GB Releases 2010 Provisional Calendar

For the 2010, the Thudersport GB series will have 10 race weekends and 2 pre-season tests and licensing courses. The entry forms are also available for downloading and submittal. So, this is the third year of the series - and the second year was quite successful - and there will be participants from at least 8 nations. The series is a true up-and-coming championship, so try to catch at least one of the events...

Luke de la Cour Wins Last Thundersport Race of the Year

The 2009 season for the Thundersport GP1 Championship ended at the Rockingham circuit earlier this month. Luke de la Cour took home a third position and won the final race of the season. He only managed to secure eighth place overall, but this finish certainly shows signs of improvement. Again, another Yamaha rider climbing on top of the standings - well, maybe next year...
